Why does my car battery die if I don't use it for a day?

I have a VW new Beetle... and if I don't use my car for over a day, and I go to start it, my car won't start. What could be the problem? We quickly jump the battery, and then my car starts...also if i leave the lights on for about 15 minutes it dies too.
