Why does my bike sometimes making a clunking noise when I pedal?

Okay so when I pedal my bike makes a clunking noise and then goes normal until another 180 degree turn and then makes another clunking chain sound. It happened last time to my bike and i just put my foot full down and my chain snapped. So now got a new chain on but didnt make the noise for a while until now. Please help thanks
