why does my 95 ford f-150 not want to start?

It took me an hour to start it yesterday and its acting like its not getting the fuel it needs when I try to excelerate or shift into a higher gear... it starts to sputter and spat and I can hear an airy sound like pressure is escaping somewhere.... not constant but a slight shhh shhh shhh with the rythm of the pistons...this is not my week
it has about 221000 miles
