I was driving my used (new to me) '01 pontiac grand am with 109k miles on it to my house after I bought it and my friend noticed the exhaust system seemed to be bouncing around like crazy when he drove behind me. I don't know much about cars but I jacked it up and looked at the exhaust and didn't see any support underneath it. It also appeared that there were little runners running on my body that looked like they may be used for clamps of some sort.

I just took some wire and put it where I could under the catalytic converter and made it real tight so it wouldn't bounce around. I took it in to get an oil change and they didn't notice anything (not even my funny looking job of the wire under there) so I asked the guy about it and he said the newer model's exhausts are supported by rubber rings and they're supposed to bounce like that.

So, was the guy at the car place right and I'm just a dummy for putting that thing on there, or should I go look for some clamps and put them on there just in case?

I haven't had a chance to look yet, but I haven't seen anything that actually goes underneath the exhaust in the middle to support it not even those rubber band things the guy was talking about.
