I just got Ubuntu 9. Very nice. I tried to play a movie using Totem, It won't work, I updated all the codecs NADA!! Then I downloaded MPlayer supposely stable. It does not run the media!! No error but just won't play my movie. Finally I got VLC Player , It plays the movie but the picture is HOORIBLE. My question is WHEN!! Linux will start to have stable media?? Linux folks ALWAYS criticise Windows etc.. But Linux seems to be stable for 1 thing DATABASE & SERVER!! But sorry when it comes to games , media , musics they are 100 years behind Windows. However I am going to keep Ubuntu 9 as the ONLY reason I downloaded was to use LAMP but I was hoping to witness some improvements from the last version I tried 2 years ago Ubuntu 7.

They are not behind. The standard media formats restricted on ubuntu because they cost money to package with the system. Things like the mp3, mp4, wma, mov, dvd's etc... all are copyrighted data formats and computer companies like apple and windows pay the people who created the data formats to ship them in their systems. Linux is a free system, therefore they cannot legally include these formats in the system.

EDIT:
Most linux distributions have a "Restricted" component on the install cd or on the internet. You can install that and it will enable all the stuff you want to do, so long as you agree to the terms of the "Restricted" package.
