why does Japan have merchandise and parodies in anime of american shows / movies?

is it cause they were such a great hit in america it struck world world wide and became popular "outside" USA ???. i dont know what is it ?
i saw this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LlF3-6GdqCA&feature=channel and the "second" japanese toy store he went to had "alot" of merchandise from american hits
