Why does it take a circumstance to "find God"?

It's so pathetic to me, for example; All these gang-bangers in prison, after they committed murders and rapes etcc.. they **suddenly** "find god" and say they have changed and they can be a better person..

Isn't this just a cheap way to reduce there own sentence or get on a parole quicker? Damn, even I can see that. I just don't buy it.
