Rap started as a raw, beautiful way to show your passion for life and your experiences. It has since, in the past two decades, evolved (or regressed, more like it.) into the same old, repetitive, synthetic, autotuned, fake shit. What happened to a DJ spinning vinyls? Now it's all done on computer. What happened to talkboxes? Now it's autotune. What happened to GOOD RAPPERS? Now it's Soulja Boy and shit like that. 10-20 years ago, if a kid like Soulja Boy came along like, "I want to be a rapper!" He would have gotten knocked out. Now, people like him are actually getting famous! I just want to know where real hip-hop went and when the hell it's coming back. I was pretty much hopeless up until I discovered who J. Cole was. I mean, me, I'm stuck deep in the 90's with no signs of advancing anytime soon, but i accidentally stumbled upon him a few weeks ago and he brought back that hope. For once, I thought, "Finally, a new rapper with an old school flow." The thing is, can one man do the job? Can hip-hop be revived? Are there more rappers out there bound for fame willing to bring the old-school back, or are we doomed to an eternity of autotune, Young Money, cough syrup induced laughing fits, and metaphors so simple my 6-year-old brother could have come up with better. Seriously... I heard a song by Drake, or Lil Wayne (one or the other, don't know who exactly.. These new guys, they all sound the same) that was like, "I work this shit out. Cardio." I wanted to cry.
sqw1irl@ No, I listen to those guys, too. Atmosphere is great. Sage Francis actually grew up where I live and went to the same place I go, AS220 in Providence, which is where he got famous. My question is mainly aimed at mainstream.
