Why does intelligence play such a huge role in the God/NoGod debate?

I see it all the time: "your beliefs are stupid" or "this group is definitely smarter than that group". Stuff like that. Why?

Intelligence is nothing to be proud of, we're born with it. I'm pretty darn smart, but it's not something I had to work for, I had the luck to be born like this.

Beliefs are never a completely rational decision. Nobody has 100% knowledge of how everything/The Universe came to existence, thus a gut feeling is always involved in any religious belief. Be it theistic or atheistic, it's never 100% rational.

I'm smart, I'm an atheist. Why on earth would that give me the right to call other belief-groups less intelligent? And even if it were true, what does it matter?

Argument ad Stupidum.

You're stupid so I win the argument. Or something along those lines.

Smart enough to believe in logic while floating in a infinite universe. I always loved that one.

I don't even possess the "knowledge" (definitive and incontrovertable reason) that other people exist, much less so that the universe exists, or of how it operates.
