closed minded? It just seems that no matter who we support, Republican or Democrat, we can never seem to have a decent conversation with the opposing party. Any Ideas why? I was just wondering.

It is so frustrating that people support Obama though! He is a racist, socialist pig! How could someone do such a thing!

I am not American, so count my answer half-in. :)

I think the main reason for the madness is the fact that you will have a hard time finding a country that personalises its election campaigns as much as the United States. While there is a general tendency for election campaigns to be more about the people rather than the political agenda, America tops it big time.

Because of that, it seems to be very hard for people to simply discuss matters, it´s as if the people behind the topic get dragged in automatically. In addition to that, families get drawn into campaigns. Instead of looking at agendas, suddenly somebody´s pregnant daughter or elite-university wife becomes the focus of attention - not something I like or would want in my country. Definitely not.

I think another aspect of this is the ashamingly low number of people who actually BOTHER to vote in the US. If you know that the majority of people doesn´t even give a damn (if you don´t vote, that´s what it means - you don´t give a damn), you´ll probably try even harder to win people over, resulting in more "aggressive" campaigning on the side of already convinced voters as well.

My take is that people realize the weaknesses in their positions and therefore get defensive. Defensive quickly moves to anger. Yes, we are that close-minded, in politics and religion.

Because the things we believe about politics are very visceral, and nobody is wrong about their own heart and soul.

Therefore, if you disagree with my heart and soul, you are attacking me on the deepest possible level, so I must retaliate with all my force.

This is why, in polite society (instead of anonymous message boards,) we simply do not discuss politics unless we agree with each other.

i think one of the reasons is because people who are really into politics are so opinionated and biased that they don't see anyone else's opinion but theirs.

I guess Tuggy's informatively intelligent statement that gave such a epiphany of remarkable insight about Obama should answer your question.<-that was all sarcasm by the way. Becuase people feel strongly about this usually-no matter how ignorant, uninformed, biased, or hype swayed they may be.
