Why does everyone bash fan voting at the all-star game?

This is my opinion on the matter.
I'm not saying that fans pick the best players, or even generally make decent players. The game however is made for the fans. They get to watch who they want to watch.
They don't pick based on current skill and ability very often I agree. However these players have grown popular on pedigree, is that really so awful to discredit.
However they get to pick only 10/34 players on the team, roughly a third of the players.
The player votes and manager selections field the majority of the team.
With many deserving players still left off, and many players making it that shouldn't, why is this fact so oftenly ignored and the blame continually lands on the fans.
Yes we have no control over those picks, but they should go to deserving players in theory correct?
So these picks don't determine starters, well if you look at the starting lineups are they really that bad, are these players really that undeserving of a spot? If so is it really that big a deal, they'll be swapped out soon enough.
One suggestion to encourage voting of deserving players would maybe to allocate a certain number of picks to media personnel and analysts?
