Why does Android HoneyComb come pre-installed with plenty of applications that does the same thing?

For an example, there is an application called 'Latitude' and 'Maps'. I also find it strange that I have an application for 'GMail' and another for 'Email'. "Books" and "MyLibrary" is another example. I cannot remove either of the two applications; I always want one application per function.
