round is the easiest shape to make the pizza, and conventional slices are 1/8 circles. the box is square because it is easy to go from a flat piece of cardboard into a folded up box. going from a flat piece of cardboard to a circular box would be difficult. what are you going to do about the round sides?

I've lived in cities where the pizzas were all square. Round is just an easy shape to make dough. When the dough maker throws the dough in the air, the centrifical force turns the edges outward to form a circle. Square pizzas are usually formed in pans and not by hand.

The square box takes up less room, easier to fold and stacks better.
