I hate to sound like an irresponsible person, but lack of knowledge may lead to that, and thats what i'm trying to avoid. i just got a lab puppy yesterday and would like to take care of it the best way i can. any comments/suggestions would be greatly appreciated and considered!

He'll come around. 8 weeks is pretty young to take a pup away from his mom and litter mates. Right now you should focus ALL of your energy on socializing the pup, you have a 3-4 week window that starts at 8 weeks old.

Take him EVERYWHERE with you, let him experience as much as possible right now, it will help him to be balanced and confident for the rest of his life!

Get him checked up at the vet, and set up a vaccination schedule. Then let him meet LOTS of people and animals, but keep him from getting TOO close to other animals until all of his shots are done.

Good luck with your puppy! The whining and stuff is probably him just trying to get used to his new home, without his mates!

you just got him yesterday? he's totally trying to figure out what's going on...it's scary for a puppy to leave mom and the other pups and step into someone else's territory. Just be patient. At 8 weeks he needs you to reassure him that all is OK and he's a good boy.

He'll chill out eventually.

we have a 2 year old white lab and shes always done it. she does it because she can't do exactly what she wants. like if we tell her to lay down, or she wants to be pet, they just do it, try to train him not to.

Yeh, it seems to be normal. Our collie was the same age when we first bought her home. It took her two months to stop from crying in the night and many sleepless nights for us. I made the mistake of sitting with her at night till she feel asleep and then going to bed only to findout that she would howl when she woke a couple of hours later. (Don't do it!!!!) Perserver away from them and they will get used to it a lot quicker. A ticking clock by their bed helps and a water bottle which simulates the mother, not too hot that it will burn just warm.

I have a two year old lab, he did the same thing. After a few days he started to add a diffent sound to it. Now, two year,s later it's like he's trying to tell me something. It's cool, because I talk to him and he make his sounds. Talk to him, take him every were with you, and have fun.

First, he's an infant. He doesn't know how else to communicate with you other than whining. Also, he's an infant...therefore you are his mommy, or pack leader, so he WILL follow you everywhere.

I agree with the other poster...take him everywhere, but keep it light and SAFE. Cuddle him a LOT, start the potty training and the mental stimulation immediately. Just make sure he knows you will take care of him...not just food and water, but that you love him to peices and will do anything for him (while still being ALPHA).

I'd go to your local bookstore TODAY and buy the Everything Labrador book...at the very least get "Good Dogs, Great Owners."
