Why doens't the cd player on my 1997 pontiac grand prix gtp work?

I just bought a 1997 Grand prix gtp. I bought it used, and the guy didn't know how to get th cd player to work. When i put a cd in, you can see the counter working, so that works. But i can't get the sound to over take the radio and come through the speakers, the radio just keeps playing. i know there must be a button im not pushing, but i don't know what it is.....any one know!?
