Why do you think the early advanced civilizations like the mayans, aztecs, die out?

I never learned about this in school and I don't have internet access here where I can easily research this myself, but why do you think the Mayan and Aztec civilizations "die" out. If they were so advanced, why didn't their civilizations thrive? What is the difference between the two?
What type of technology, mathematics did they contribute that we use today?

After their existence, why did man go "backwards" and not as intelligent as their ancestors?
