Why do you need to eject your iPod/iPhone before taking the wire out usb

wire off the usb port?
well, i never ejected my ipod nano and after a while it froze, i googled and researched, then i reset it, and it never turned on again, it was always stuck on the apple logo... till the battery ran out dry
