why do you make a bike single speed?

i am buying a bike of a guy who has upgraded it lots and has given it a raceface prodigy crank single speed with sram rear mech 8 speed. why would you make it single speed, why does it help?
 
I don't single speed sucks. Its best to have gears because you can change them to suit the place your biking in. So if you were going down hill you would go into a higher gear to go faster and if you were going up hill you would shift down gears. Although the only bad thing is Derailleurs can snap :(
