Why do women/wives take any joke about exercise as a fat joke about them?

My wife would actually make jokes about her own weight, but her aunts would get super offended by any jokes about exercise or food as a personal attack on them. Now it just so happened said aunts are heavier than me, and I'm not Gandhi or anything.

I never made jokes that could be interpreted as such around them knowing they would be offended forever because they would b*tch constantly about how someone once said something months ago.
 
Some people don't have a thick skin.

Maybe it's not WHAT you are saying, it's HOW you are saying it.

I've been on both sides of the weight continuum, but when I was at my heaviest and someone made an exercise or weight joke- yeah, I was a bit offended- but I also took that as motivation. I wanted to lose the weight and prove that person wrong.
