why do we say "you were" when in singular tense?

we say "i was, she was, he was, that person was"
as you can see, all the singular subjects use "was" for the past tense of "to be".

HOWEVER "you" uses "were". even if we were talking to one person, we still use "were" for this subject. why is this so?
