Do you learn anything because you are going to die? of course not. But knowledge can give you a much richer life. And knowing the past is just one piece of what we could do to better understand the world around us.
A study of history gives me some perspective on how certain peoples and cultures behave. What are some of the challenges they have faced. I can have a much greater appreciation for the feelings and motivations of another person by understanding the past of their people. As our society becomes more diverse, it is important to have an appreciation for the lands of other peoples that we meet more and more each day.
I'll give you an example. The Russian people have a long history of good reasons to be fearful of foreigners. I won't drag you through the chronology, but they have been hit so many times from so many directrions for so many centuries that they gotta be a little punchy by now.
Also, reading about remarkable people gives me an appreciation for everyone's potential.
And one more. For me: the stories of the past are incredibly interesting. From the seige of Troy to the agony of Truman, the richness of what has happened in our recorded history is far beyond what fiction writers have ever had to offer. No one could have invented political intrigue like 15th century England, or a military engagement like Napoleon's invasion of Russia, or a character like Howard Hughes. The real stuff that's gone on keeps me pretty entertained...
That's it for me...
