Why do we hate murderers but love murder in the media?

We all say we hate murderers in any capacity whether they be serial killers, rapist/murderers, kiddie murderers, OAP murderers, in fact murderers of any sort; yet why do we love them in films, tv shows, books etc etc etc? Aren't we just being hypocritical liars? Why lock someone up for life for murdering, then go home at night to,'enjoy', a movie or documentary about murder?
Why is murder in the media such a big thing? Why does it dominate most movies in some form or another?
Why do we like the entertainment of watching someone be killed in a fictional sense, but despise and hate them if it's been done for real to someone we know/love?
What is so appealing to us that we enjoy murder mysteries? Why does the media love broadcasting news stories about killers? Surely it's depressing to hear someone else has been murdered? So why the appeal for it in fiction or even knowing that someone somewhere else has had to deal with their survival from someone who tried to kill them?
Are we all really just blatant hypocrites?

No, but I do think that we are born voyeurs. We like to be the fly on the wall and part of the excitement without having to face it in reality.

When it is for real, it saddens us. Watching made up shows or reading fiction lets us be a voyeur without the sadness.
