Why do US TV shows (like LOST) never provide answers & UK ones always do?

It seems strange to me that anyone could enjoy a finale that completely sidesteps questions for which we have been expecting answer for the last 6 years. I was completely gutted by the finale. US mystery shows always pose as intellectual, but then collapse into garbage or TV soap quality: XFILES, TWIN PEAKS, Battlestar Gallactica, etc.
