Why do they usually rank mountains by elevation?

I looked about mountain height, and I believe prominence is the term for how tall it is from the surrounding terrain, right? Isn't this a better measurement to rank mountains? Because with measuring by elevation, couldn't you have a fairly small mountain with a rather high elevation and vice versa? Am I just wrong and they usually do go by prominence, or am I right? If they do go by elevation usually, can someone explain why they use it instead of prominence?
