Why do they use so much CGI in movies?

Since the past seven years or so, it seems to me that movie makers can't help but make excessive (over)use of CGI in many of their films (especially action films). What happened to the days where action scenes looked very believable and realistic? Now, most movies feature nothing but nauseating camera angles, jump cuts, fast-motion and other pseudo-special effects that are just unbearable to watch (not to mention sub-par acting, in most cases). Give me Seagal, Van Damme, or Chuck Norris (in their heyday) anytime. What happened?
