Why do they say hike in football?

I know that you can say anything you want to hike the football if you're quarterback. You can say "Down" to hike the ball, you can clap, heck youcan say titlliewinks to hike it but why is hike so famous

In pro and collegiate games they normally say hut. That is why they have snap counts so you know when to go instead of relieving on the word hike.

Hike means "to snap, to pass from center" so it's been the most commonly used. However, the game has changed and not everyone uses it. P. Manning has been known to use random words that only his O-Line & wideouts know. He, and others, even go off a silent count. So the word "hike" is losing its popularity as everyone knows what it means.

Why does everybody ask this? Why does it matter? They have to say something. Guys like JaMarcus Russell would probably rather say "cheeseburger", but that takes too long.
