Why do the Mormon students in my American history class keep arguing with the teacher?

The other day, the teacher was telling us how Native Americans arrived in America by crossing a land bridge that was still traversable up in Alaska before the sea levels rose. DNA results provide ample evidence that this is indeed the truth but then the Mormons started arguing claiming that Native Americans are descendants of a lost tribe of Hebrews that somehow sailed from the Middle East to America thousands of years before mankind invented ships capable of crossing an ocean. The stuff that they were saying was so not true and they kept repeating that “God told their prophet so it must be true.”

And then the other day in science class a bunch of Christian creationists were arguing about evolution! Is this why the American education system is in such tatters, because there are too many children whose parents insist that their religious nonsense is true and prefer keep their children ignorant of the truth and in the dark; a nation wide mushroom complex?
