Why do the community fish in my freshwater tropical aquarium keep dying?

I had three mollies and a small catfish in a 5 gal tank under a window. I didn't have a lid so I used a grated cover that was once used to keep a snake from escaping and put a lamp with compact flourescent lights pointing through the top. Using a 10gal heater (with auto shut off) and 5gal powerhead and an airpump designed for a 20 gal tank any reason why this set-up wouldn't work?
water has been treated with aqueon's water conditioner, a little bit of api's aquarium salt, and api's stress zyme when it was started. any time new fish were added or taken away i used api's stress coat+ (which is working just fine right now in my larger aquarium)
temperature remained constant at 80 degress F every time i checked.

I have removed the fish and will be taking a sample of the water to petsmart someday soon.

my guess is the ammonia probably built up and then when the first fish died, ph must have shot up, which caused more deaths.

Well 5 gallons is too small for that many fish, even with their small size. Test your water, with a small tank ammonia levels can easily skyrocket.
