Why do sports jersey have numbers?

I've heard lots of explanations about this, from: Helping aid scorekeepers to identify players, helping referees and umpires identify players, keeping uniforms separate...

But I'm sure there's some "official" reason as to why jerseys and uniforms have to have numbers on them.
