Why do Sony PSPs do this, even when their power is not being used?

I own a PSP-3000 and a PSP Go and have had, in my possession, every model to date at one time or another.

I've noticed that a fully-charged battery with the Hold switch activated will eventually die on its own, even if the system and wireless Internet switch are turned off.

In fact, I just recently charged my 3000 to 100% and made sure that the wireless switch was off and the Hold switch in place beforehand.

When I checked its battery life last night, a few weeks since it was last plugged in, it only had a single bar left; I didn't play it at all.

Oh and no, my PSP is healthy, so that's not the problem.

I just don't get how a battery can drain by itself when the system isn't being used at all.

iPods do this too.
To the first responder: Yes, it's completely turned off and not just put in sleep mode.
