Why do some parents choose a breed of dog with a reputation for violence?

This is not a bashing question. I don't expect to be bashed for asking, and please don't go after or thumb others for their answer. I'm just curious as to why some people with children in the house choose a Rottweiler, Pit Bull, Akita, etc. as a family pet when choosing a puppy.

I'm also curious, if you had the animal first, then had children, how did you handle the dilemma. Did you keep the dog no-brainer, or keep a close eye on it, or find it a new home?
