OK, so I am a frequent user of Y!A and one thing that really bothers me is that so many people think that they have a mental disorder. A person hears a voice and they think that they have schizophrenia; a person has been sad for 3 days and now they want to see a psychiatrist or get committed. It is rather insulting when you think about it. Lately, I have even read a few questions about people who want to willingly make themselves schizophrenic, which, again, blows my mind.
I have severe OCD and it has affected my life in so many ways; however I still manage to work and go to school full time (psychology major). It's difficult but my doctor and my medication has helped my life immensely. I have been doing much better over the last five months.
It really gets on my nerves how people who are a bit neat and/or organized think that they have OCD! It gets annoying after a while. People who constantly claim to have mental disorders just make it more difficult for those who do have mental disorders. OCD is a serious and distressing disorder, and if someone suffered from it, they would likely know!!
Why do people do this?? What is so “appealing” about saying that you might suffer from a mental illness. Is it a cry for attention? As someone with a background in psychology, I am yet to understand this.
**This question should NOT offend people who do suffer from a mental disorder. I know many people really do suffer [and some questions are legitimate] and that is really unfortunate. **
Thanks guys,
Marley P.
