Why do so many people discuss depression & suicide on this site?

Obviously they are not serious about it, or they wouldn't advertise it and cry out for help? My question is:- Does this site get monitored by professional organisations and more particularly, what does Yahoo! do to assist these people? Do they ignore these questions or pass people's details on to professionals? If you read between the lines of a lot of the 'mental health' area, people are desperately calling out for help, threatening to end their life, taking overdoses etc.? Surely Yahoo! would be in contact with these people to offer assistance, wouldnt they? If not, wouldnt they be accountable for a death if it could have been avoided? I'm really astounded that a lot of this website deals with death & suicide.

To all of you that are suffering depression, remember that it will get better in time, seek professional help, take each day at a time, and really look around you at the loved ones that are there to help you if only you let them.
I understand your reactions to people discussing their depression on this site - I'm worried about all those people who are contemplating suicide. Shouldnt something be done to help them? Wouldnt we do something if it was a child complaining about abuse? Why not suicide?

Because we don't have anyone tangible who will talk to us about our problems, so we seek help where we can find it! Its a part of life honey, deal with it!

As for what they do to help, I suppose that you could say the targeted advertising is something. While reading this question the banner next to it is for a depression help site.

Edit: And now it's for outback. And then a casino. Never mind, I'm wrong on this one.

Sometimes it just helps to have someone to talk to .To write it out ,to find others who can relate to how you feel ,to know that others have been through the same thing or at least something similar.

You also have to remember many people don't have insurance to seek out mental health care even if they wanted too.

As for the old they are paying for Internet? You can access the Internet for Free at the library.

Others are not comfortable asking for help face to face. The Internet offers a very high level of personal security. Look at some of the answers people give. Many would never say such things to someones face.

As for Yahoo seeking these people out? Never gonna happen. If that happens then they will start charging us. Not many people are going to do this for free. And then your talking about contacting people all over the world. And 90% of them are going to deny it.

Life is a hard and lonely thing sometimes. Professional organizations are swamped already. I've been a message board and chat room hobbyist since 1995, and it's ALWAYS been like this, lonely people making a last ditch attempt to get someone to listen to them.

Think about that sometime when you're walking down the street, how many people you pass must be this miserable inside with no one to talk to.

You're right, it IS worrying, but people are choosing to put up questions on here rather than contacting an organisation like the Samaritans and we have to allow them to have responsibility for their own lives. I don't mean we shouldn't do what we can, but plenty of the people who come on here saying they are suicidal wouldn't contact if they thought it was going to be personally followed up. It's BECAUSE it's anonymous that they are able to write. Sometimes, just the fact of someone bothering to respond with some kind words gives them a sense of possibility, enough to stop them going ahead with their plans then and there. If we're lucky, they may even follow some of the advice and seek help.

I don't think one can hold Yahoo! accountable for a suicide following posting of the intention to commit suicide. Not least, as I said, the vast majority of the people who write like this are only using the site BECAUSE no-one is going to follow it up in a direct way.
