Why do so many people complain that PBS shows 'elitist' programming?

I'm not 'elitist', but I enjoy those PBS shows. A couple of weeks ago I was watching a show on that channel and it was talking about these lions, and their evolutionary history, then after that there was a show that was acting out a book about WWI. I really found those shows enjoyable. Why do people complain that PBS is 'elitist'?
