Why do so many parents let video games, facebook, and cell phones raise their children?

Am I the only one that thinks this is odd and horrible? It seems the vast majority of kids 6-17, have way too much access to all of these. I don't think video games are too bad, if balanced..but I've seen so many parents giving their kids iPhones..letting them site on social networking websites all day..that's just as bad as abusing a kid..yet those same parents usually freak out over other parents being strict and spanking their kids. Is this backward or what? lol
