Why do so many authors use the 'F***' word so gratuitously in their work? Is it

only for adult shock value? I've written an 80,000 (plus) word story about a terribly dysfunctional, estranged married couple who end up sharing living quarters in the middle of their nasty divorce. The story includes a lot of sexual tension, an almost rape/robbery, and another scene where one of the characters is arrested and framed for attempted murder.

I certainly could have, but didn't used the 'f-word', not once. Will my story be taken seriously and/or appreciated without "F-bombs"?
I referred to them as 'f-bombs' because some/most times they seem to be simply and casually dropped in place for lack of a better word. The word itself doesn't bother me, it's the way it's used...like killing a spider with a hammer.
