Why do so many Americans TRULY think that they could out-debate a politician?

Do you truly think that you can win a debate against a congressman?
I was watching the pre-vote house floor debate over Healthcare. While I was listening to some Republican rant about how "Obamacare" was going to ruin our system, then listening to the Dems respond, it occured to me that no matter how much I disagreed with a congressman or thought that he/she was wrong, any one of them could easily crush an average american in a debate.

All of the Congress representatives.... on both isles. All of them seem much greater at finding facts to cite and using rhetoric than you, me, or the majority of the USA. Yet I hear of MANY people who think that they could easily take on and win against a congressman.

And keep in mind that in the Federal Government, these ORDINARY representatives are the lowest ranked and LEAST skilled politicians. Imagine trying to win a debate against a Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, or Barrack Obama!

Do they TRULY think they can outdebate a representative?
Remember, these politicians have all the stats, have heard all the arguments, and know all the counter arguments.

I think that few of us could. After all, those guys spend their lives focusing on these issues, and have entire staffs devoted to coming up with talking points . . . not to mention that if they weren't pretty good at debating they probably wouldn't have won their offices in the first place.

Many of them are lawyers as well.

Being a shrewd politician doesn't make you smart.

They have staff that find the stats and tell them what to think, they don't do their own research and they don't have the facts at hand.

Once they have spewed the talking points enough they become ingrained.
