If a student walks into a school and shoots a group of people, wounding several and killing 3 in the process it ends up being "Breaking News" for the next 2-3 days on CNN and Fox News. We are bombarded with debates online regarding bullying in schools and gun control.
When a adult does this, its page 3 news.
For instance, yesterdays shooting at a campus in Alabama. When it first happened CNN broke in with their big red "BREAKING NEWS" banner, describing the horror of the latest school shooting. When the news came out that it was actually a teacher who did the shooting, a female teacher at that coverage of it became not so important, it was moved to a bottom of the news hour type story.
Is their something more sensational that the media and society finds regarding school shootings by students? Is it kind of like the whole sex sells concept? That the media knows people will be more interested in a shooting by some kid than they would be in a shooting by an adult?
At the end of the day it should not matter, as three people are dead. The media coverage should be just the same in either case regardless of who did the shooting or if the shooting took place in a school, a factory, a shopping mall or a office building.
Why is it just not as big of a news story if its a adult doing the shooting, or if its a shooting in a office building by a disgruntled worker or something to that effect?
