Why don't my Parents support my Ideas?
Before judging me, please read my ENTIRE question.
I am 28, just resigned from a job I hated and my Mom let me move back in rent free until I land on my feet again. My younger brother, 26, also lives here. He's been there since he was 18, even though he has a college degree AND a job. I also have a degree, and have been out of the house since I was 18. This is the first time I've returned home in 10 years.
The other night my Mom asked me what I had been writing recently. I'm a screenwriter and write films. I told her and Dad I was writing a movie about Bullies, and how a father finally takes a stand against some teenage girls who bully his disabled daughter on a daily basis, threatening her, hitting her and humiliating her. The Dad goes to the school, the teachers, the administration- and they do NOTHING to help him. He finally takes action and goes on the school bus and threatens the girls who are bullying his daughter, saying he will kill them if they don't leave her alone. This is based partly on a true incident that happened late last year. The film will focus on why schools and teachers often "favor" the bullies and don't protect the victims, and that the parents of the bullies never do anything. Its only after the victim kills him/herself that something is done.
My parents hated my idea. My Dad, a retired Curator, and my mom- a School Librarian herself- told me that I needed to do more research and that the father in the film should go to prison for threatening the kids. When I tried to explain that he was only protecting his daughter because no one else was doing anything, my Dad barked at me to sit down and shut up, and my Mom told me to either bequiet or go to my room. I couldn't believe it! This was a script first off, and secondly- they always make me feel like I'm an idiot when in reality this is based off REAL stuff going on! They acted like it was just an excuse for me to argue. What's worse- they let my brother get away with EVERYTHING! He can rant all he wants about sports and politics, and they totally support him and never tell him to shut up. But I, a PUBLISHED writer from many national papers and journals, am told to go to my room.
I told my Mom and Dad flat out that they could shut the **** up, and that they were judgmental assholes. I was going to slap my mom in her face, but I stopped myself. I am now moving in with a friend. Before I left, I turned to my Mom and told her flat out "Don't talk to me until you're ready to accept me as an adult, and also someone who has intelligent opinions about our society." We haven't spoken now for 2 months. Like wow. And she adopted me too. I wasn't born to her.
This all makes me so ******* mad. I cry often because if you don't have your parents support, what can you do? Why did this happen? And WAS I wrong am my Screenplay approach? I mean come on, the school systems do NOTHING to stop bullying! If anything, they encourage the bullies because in America, nothing's a big deal until someone is killed. And the media is involved. It just enrages me. Thoughts?
