Why do people who are not happy with immigration gloss over these facts?

if Britain did not have an empire, she would not have little need for connection with the rest of the world and maintain the competitiveness she obtained during the imperial reign.

If Britain did not commit large scale crime against ethnic minorities in the past, such as slave trade, mass killings of colonial subjects, then she would not have immigration issues in society that are challenging moral values of her society, and hence she had to set up some laws to remedy that.

If Britain did not try to impose her culture on others in the past, nowadays she did not have to make her ideology acceptable to others by accepting people from all over the world so that she could maintain Britain as the financial hub of the world since the colonial reign and to show the rest of the world that Britain is now a changed society, not one that who believes in slaves trade and colonisation and disagrees with international values of democracy and human rights.

Therefore, yes, Britain could do without immigration, but of course her politicians want that too, but it is just so difficult for Britain to do that without making Britain unacceptable to the world.

Countries without colonial past do not have that much immigration issues without being subjected to furious debate from the world. So they have more flexibility with how they could control immigration.
