Why do people whine so much about their HOAs (homeowner's associations)?

It seems like people are always whining about their HOAs, or are trying to get laws changed to limit the power of HOAs.

I don't really get it. Didn't those people read the covenants and conditions BEFORE they chose to buy a house within an HOA?

A house in an HOA isn't really "your" house. It's more like a condo unit. You can buy one, but you don't get to decide what to do with it - management does.

So why are people complaining when they chose to buy in an HOA in the first place?

These HOA often go over the top sometimes with their guidelines and restrictions; they blur the line between keeping the community nice and dictating your existence. The old neighborhood I lived in had a HOA ran by a bunch of powerless housewives who just wanted to feel important.

It was a living hell. I can see why people nationwide are having growing problems with their HOA.
