Why do people use their windshield wipers while going through a car wash?

I only use the manual car wash at my local place, and while I was drying my car, I saw about 10 cars go through the automatic. Every single one of them had their wipers on during the wash.
Is this a habit because of water on the windshield and the necessity to see?
