Why do people think that if I don't want children then I must be selfish or weird?

I have never wanted children and don't intend to have any. Other people I've met seem appalled that I don't want them. I've been called selfish and weird and have been told that since I am able physically to have them that to not have them would be wrong.

Why do people think like this?
