Why is it that people say dance isn't a sport?
Seriously i think dance is probably harder then many sports! I know that my team practices 5 days a week 3 of those days are at 6 AM and the others are after school, and all of them last 2 hours!
Also our season is WAY longer than the other sports at my school, it goes all year!
Plus we do compete, we aren't just there for football game halftime!

So please tell me why people think this?

Competitive dance is a sport - it's a competition in which success depends on the competitor's athletic physical skills.

Non-competitive dance is not a sport - it's not a competition.

Keep in mind, there are many things that are harder than many sports, such as construction, police work, firefighting, surgery, and armed combat, but are not sports because they are not done in competition.

It's not about how hard an activity is, or how physically demanding it is. That's not what makes the distinction between sport and non-sport. It's all about whether it's a competition, and whether success is based on the athletic physical skills of the competitor.

Certain kinds of dancing have been made into a sport but dance was originally intended as an art, not something that is competitive.

The competitive aspect of dance has, only recently, been incorporated into mainstream, American, culture.

So to answer your question...

People don't think dance is a sport because, traditionally, it is not.

That doesn't make it true but at one time this was the case.

I think it's a "semi-sport", but you know, some people think golf isn't a sport so for them Dance is like nothing...i think it qualifies as a sport..
