why do people tell people to be themselves, but then they still judge?

Like, why do people say "oh, be a homosexual - it's who you are" or "be your race - it's a part of your ethnicity", or "be you, it's your personality and no one can tell you you're unworthy or unequal", and yet these same people who say to "be yourself" go out and laugh at people when they don't dress according to the norm, they yell at bums, they have opinions of what's "cool" and "uncool", or "attractive" and "unattractive". All the while, they tell people to be themselves. What the hell? Did I miss something, or is the whole idea of diverse equality flawed in that way?
