Why do people stare and talk about you if you wear contacts?

OK, so I wear my colored contacts (they are piercing opaque blue lenses) to school and when im walking around and people walk past they stare at me funny and some people wont stop talking about me, its weird! Why am I getting all this attention? Do they know im wearing contacts?
