Why do people spread rumors?

Haha. "That girl's a slut." "I know, man. Lets go talk to her!"

In all seriousness, its just highschool. I know it sounds like an eternity, but rumors die faster than the people who tell them.

here's the bottom line.

if you want a secret kept, keep it. you make it public knowledge by telling somone else. how can you set a rule ("it's a secret") and then immediately break the rule ("here's the secret")? it invalidates the whole process of secrecy.

2) you handled yourself extremely poorly. you let an emotional response dictate your logical response. learn from that.

3) some people (i learned this the hard way, too, with my dorm roommate my freshman year) have this particular insecurity: they want to make it known to others that they are more "in the loop" than you are. this involves spreading people's secrets. if you're an information hub, people look up to you.

answer? don't tell her things you want kept secret.

here's what i've been doing for a long time: in my tightest circle of friends, i'll tell one friend one secret, then the next friend the next secret, etc, if i think any of my secrets won't fuck my life up were they to get out into the open (certain things, everyone eventually learns to keep to themselves). that way, when person B knows the secret i told person A, i know i can't tell any more secrets to person A.

You know what you need to do? You need to confront her in an adult manner. Just one day, (using every ounce in you not to upper-cut her) bring her aside and say, "Listen, I don't know if you have heard, but that secret of mine that you decided to slip has now escalated into bull shit. I told you that b/c I thought you were trustworthy. Obviously, I fucked up on that. Grow up a little would you?" And fuckin walk away. That way, you get your point across and you can get public attention if you want to...
