Why do people seem to think that evolution and creation conflict with each other?

I mean come on people. Couldn't God have created us through evolution? A lot of the Bible is not literal especially the old testament. That thing was written thousands of years ago. God was explaining creation in a way that the people could understand. If he just jumped straight to complex biology and the exact way he made the world the people would not have understood what he was talking about. I mean people didn't even figure out that sex made babies for a really long time. I doubt they would have understood evolution. I don't believe God is the author of confusion.
Ok so...
If a creationist believes solely in creation and and evolutionist believes solely in evolution, what are you called if you believe in a combination of the two?
