Why do people say that there's some kind of Twilight/HP debate?

In a debate, both sides have good points. HP is chock full of good points while any good points Twilight has can be debunked.
Just look at these categories.
Characters, Plot, Consistency
HP has well-developed characters with common sense. The romances are believable (ironic, considering Twilight is supposed to be a romance)
Twilight's characters have fewer dimensions than cardboard
HP has well-developed plots with twists and turns.
Twilight, for the most part, doesn't even have a plot. And the plots that do appear are straighter than rulers.
HP has strong female characters that are actually interesting. Hermione, Luna, McGonogall and Molly Weasley are examples.
Twilight is one of the most sexist books today. Leah, the only female wolf, can't pregnant but all the male wolves can have as many babies as they want. Same goes for the vampires. Bella takes the mental abuse Edward throws at her.
Harry is a man, who despite being seventeen, is courageous enough to sacrifice his life for complete strangers. (Deathly Hallows, anyone?)
Edward sits in High School all day thinking about how much better he is than everyone else (read the Midnight Sun draft)
Harry is good to his friends, yeah, he can be arrogant at times, but all in all, he's a good person
Edward tells Bella they won't have sex until she's a vampire but knocks her up while she's human just because they're married. It's like he cares more about being married than he does about Bella's safety. And he's totally controlling (just because he 'loves' her it does not make it okay)
In the HP world, when it says one thing in one book, like no spell can bring the dead back, it holds throughout the series.
Stephanie Meyer said that all the vamp's bodily fluids are replaced with venom, meaning that Bella shouldn't have even gotten pregnant.
Harry creates an entirely new world.
Twilight apparently lives in a world where logic and science are thrown out the window
Ron and Hermione's relationship is believable and deep.
Edward and Bella's relationship is about as deep as a kiddie pool.
Harry Potter has one Mary Sue (Ginny Weasley)
Twilight has at least three (Bella, Edward and Nessie)
Harry Potter's main theme is LOVE
Twilight doesn't know what real love is. (Okay, maybe what Carlisle &Esme and jasper & Alice have is love, but Edward and Bella's in not, it's lust)
Harry deals with his problems by fighting on and overcoming them.
Bella and Edward deal with their problems by becoming suicidal. (New Moon, anyone?)
Harry's main villains engaged in an all-out war with the good guys.
Twilight's villains were like 'Oh, she'll grow, sorry our bad.'

These days I think a lot of people (the Twilight girl fanatics) have to prove to the world that they're better than everyone else and that means proving that what they like it better than everyone else.
90 percent of them wouldn't like Twilight if it wasn't "the big thing" out right now. It's sad really

To be honest, I don't know. Every point you've mentioned is entirely true. I understand hardcore fans of Twilight defending it because they love the books or the characters but to say that it is a better written book is ridiculous.
