Why do people say that MLB games in April and May "don't mean anything"?

I think it is ignorant for people to say this because, believe it or not, when the season ends, the games that were played in April and May have EXACTLY the same value in the final standings as those played in September. Sure, September games are more exciting because a single game, or a small portion of games, can decide whether or not a team makes the playoffs, but that team would not even be in a position to make the playoffs if they had not won as many games as they did at the beginning of the season. And that team would have already clinched a playoff spot if they had won more games than they did at the beginning the season. Although games at the end of the season can be more exciting, this does not make these games more meaningful or more important than games early in the season.
What are people's thoughts on this?
